Bollywood comes together to support 'Mijwan Summer Couture 2017'!

Like every year, this year too, the film fraternity turned up in large numbers to celebrate the 6th year of the Annual Mijwan fundraiser fashion show by Manish Malhotra, ‘Mijwan Summer 2017’.

The evening witnessed several Bollywood celebrities including Neetu Singh, Sridevi, Ramesh Sippy with wife Kiran Juneja, Sushmita Sen, Farah Khan, Anupam Kher, Huma Qureshi, Sooraj Pancholi, Sangeeta Bijlani, Saiyami Kher, Sophie Choudry, Konkona Sen Sharma, Amyra Dastur, Punit Malhotra, Shriya Saran, Satish Kaushik, Kiran Rao, Nandita Das, Freddy Daruwala and Dr Madhu Chopra among others.

Everyone present for the show loved the chikankari work done by the Mijwan girls on the outfits showcased by designer Manish Malhotra. A beautiful evening spent in supporting a cause, an NGO that works towards the empowerment and education of a girl child.

The show, befitting of this year’s theme, saw superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma gracing the show and walking the ramp. It epitomizes the continuing realization of Kaifi Saab’s vision and the wonderful legacy of hope for his village, Mijwan.

Kaifi Saheb spoke of this legacy through his words:

Main Akela Hi Chala Tha Jaanibe Manzil Magar
Log Saath Aate Gaye
Aur Karvaan Banta Gaya

Talking about the show, says founder Shabana Azmi, “My father believed that India’s remarkable economic progress can only be meaningful if it reaches rural India, where 80 percent of the population lives, but is denied access to opportunity. Once, I asked him, ‘Abba, don’t you get frustrated when change doesn’t occur at the pace you want it to?’ He answered with equanimity, ‘Bete, when you are working for change, you should build into that expectation the possibility that the change might not happen in your lifetime. But you must have the conviction that if you carry on working with dedication then the change is bound to occur – even if it happens after you. His prophetic words have become my mantra in the work that I do with the weak and the dispossessed. When Kaifi Saheb embarked on the journey alone, Mijwan did not even figure on the map of India. Today Mijwan is known all over the world.”

Adds Namrata Goyal, “Nana (Kaifi Azmi) always believed in the youth to be the catalyst for change. We the youth have always taken our lives for granted - almost assumed a sense of entitlement. It's time we take responsibility and realise villages don't belong to another planet. They complete us."

Mijwan today is not only a story of the progress of a small village in India, but it’s also the story of women journeying on, past the patriarchal conforms of their society. It’s the hope for a better tomorrow, beating in the hearts of rural women who have taken charge of their own destinies.

About Mijwan Welfare Society: Mijwan Welfare Society (MWS) is an NGO founded by Kaifi Azmi in 1993 that works for the empowerment of villagers in a small village, Mijwan in Azamgarh UP where he was born. Kaifi saab believed that India's remarkable economic progress can only be meaningful if it reaches out to rural India, where 80 percent of the population lives but is denied access to opportunity.

After he passed away on 10th May 2002, daughter Shabana Azmi, along with her godchild Namrata Goyal, took on the task of carrying Kaifi saab’s dream forward by steering MWS which runs:

1.   Kaifi Azmi High School for girls

2.   Kaifi Azmi Inter College for girls

3.   Kaifi Azmi Computer Training Center

4.   Kaifi Azmi Sewing and Tailoring Center
