On the 28th World AIDS Day, www.mintageworld.com launched a docudrama on the history of the various stamps and coins being launched to spread awareness and to unite people to fight against this disease globally

December 2016, Mumbai:  On 1st December, World AIDS Day is observed worldwide. It was the first ever global health day, held for the first time in 1988. This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection, and mourning those who have died of the disease. Government and health officials, non-governmental organizations and individuals around the world observe the day, often with education on AIDS prevention and control.

Researchers believe that AIDS came from chimpanzees of Africa. It was transmitted and mutated into HIV when humans hunted these chimpanzees for their meat and came into contact with their infected blood. Over the decades, the virus slowly spread across Africa and then rest of the world. The first case of HIV was not reported until 1959. From then to now, the research behind AIDS has reached a landmark

Misconceptions of HIV like how it spreads through harmless touching or kissing or insect bites or by sharing a meal together was cleared. Facts supported by evidence were stated. HIV only spreads through blood and blood products and therefore through unprotected sex. This disease has no cure but through medicine, the infection can be controlled enabling people to live a long life.

Stamps:

In 1994, France issued a pair of se-tenant stamp honoring the discovery of the HIV virus and it’s combat.

In 2006, India Post released a postage stamp depicting the international symbol of AIDS which is the red ribbon symbol.

Neighboring countries of India like Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and China have too issued stamps as a philatelic tribute to spread the message of World AIDS Day. 

More than 100 stamps related to World AIDS Day, including those of US, Romania, Mexico, Russia, Morocco and many more have been issued.

Coins:

In 1994, France issued a 2 euro bimetallic coin depicting the red ribbon symbol at the center of the coin. It is a symbol of solidarity for the sick, shaped like an inverted ‘V’, representing victory against the disease.

World AIDS Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV and show their support for people living with the deadly disease. An estimated 34 million have the virus globally with 2.1 million in India alone. This makes it one of the most destructive pandemics in history. With rising awareness and government programs, India has decreased AIDS incidence by 57%. The biggest success story so far. By spreading awareness one can save someone’s life.
