Girish Kulkarni: What’s the problem with depicting the reality we see around us on-screen?

Actor Girish Kulkarni, who was recently seen in the web series Sacred Games, playing the role of a corrupt minister, is all praise for the freedom that the digital platform allows. However, he admits that he feels sad when even that medium is questioned for depicting uncensored reality.

“This is a debate in your head; you’re free to imagine whatever [you want],” says Girish. “We’re very hypocritical in terms of consuming things. We’ve dealt with this reality of life; we allow and use such language [in real life]; we see nudity all around; [and] there are a variety of [other] things. Come on, if somebody shows that on-screen, and that, too, with the very humble notion of making art, what’s the problem?” asks the actor, who has also been a part of films such as Dangal (2016) and Fanney Khan.

He hopes that people would see the meaning behind bold scenes that are shown for a reason. “There’s no vulgarity whatsoever [in those scenes]. Whatever scenes are bold, [they] make sense if you go deep into it. It’s an experience of the world [around you] that you’re getting to watch, which is definitely shocking,” he says.
