#MeToo movement forcing Emraan Hashmi to take a tough stand against director Soumik Sen?

After the #MeToo movement gained momentum in Bollywood last month, a number of women in the industry have mustered up the courage to call out several other directors, actors, singers and other powerful people, and have openly shared their stories of harassment and assault. Among the many men now under the scanner is director Soumik Sen, who was accused by multiple women, the latest being an actor of the film ‘Cheat India’ who anonymously accused him for his sexually exploitative behaviour. The production house backing the film starring Emraan Hashmi issued a statement denying ever receiving any complaint of inappropriate behaviour by the director. In a recent interview with Mid-Day, media professional Chandraye Sarkar, who was among the four women who outed the director, claims to have appealed to producer Atul Kasbekar to take stringent action against him. Stating that the producers’ statement was “blasphemous”, she asked why they were not taking the matter seriously and suspected it was a mean to “protect Soumik.” She went on to state that her allegation against Soumik was corroborated by Gulaab Gang co-producer Anubhav Sinha, who posted a tweet about the same, apologised and even sent her a message saying he would never work with him again.
