A show on the complexities of relationships_Kehne Ko Humsafar Hian 2- Shobhaa De A show on the complexities of relationships

The new season of Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain kicks off with Ananya (Mona Singh) following her mind over her heart, as she embraces a new life in Qatar, forcing her husband Rohit (Ronit Roy) to take a call on his future plans.

Presenting her opinion about the show, eminent critic and author Shobhaa De says, “So much in today’s ‘dikhawe ka zamana’ is purely Kehne ko… This thought, when set in a contemporary context, triggers off a chain of emotional landslides that makes the protagonists and viewers writhe in suspense. Ananya’s husband Rohit has to leave his comfort zone in Delhi (business, family), play second fiddle to Ananya and become a part of her new dream? Or… it’s the ‘or’ that intrigues in a story that skilfully explores modern-day dilemmas and dynamics, as middle-aged, mature couples struggle to find answers and solutions while pretending to be happy. At this point, Poonam, the ex-wife, is coping with rejection and menopause — a deadly combo. While Ananya has made it clear that it’s career first and maybe a baby next, it leaves Rohit with a hangdog expression, wondering what the hell to do about his messed-up domestic situation.” Season 2 of the show captures the struggles of the man coming to terms with the fact that he has chosen a ‘difficult’ woman, who is ambitious, uncompromising and steadfast. But can he actually cope with the balance of power shifting? De adds, “Looking back at the first episode of season one, I recall this line: “You are just a dirty secret — not a wife, not a girlfriend!”

“Who needs marriage?” counters Ananya. She is today’s focussed careerist — with her own home, car and income. She loves silver jhumkas and Omar Khayyam, and discusses books and art with her lover (Ronit Roy, appropriately shame-faced throughout). Gal pal cautions, “He will never marry you!” Surprise! He does. But what follows are comparisons and contrasts. I had initially told myself: This is a no-brainer. Here’s one more version of the ‘pati, patni aur woh’ narrative. But no! We are talking 2019. The second season is yet another sharp take on the eternal triangle. No martyrdom. No regret. No guilt.”

De signs off with, “Let me guess; Poonam will lose weight, find a job, find a man, and get a life. Menopause be damned. Poonam ka time aa gaya! Either way, it’s women on top and I love it, already!”
